Kirksville is a leader in the healthcare industry in the state of Missouri and throughout the nation. Our advances in the medical field started with the foundation of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic (KCOM) Medicine in the 1800's and continues today.

A.T. Still created the college as a place to train doctors in the field of Osteopahtic Medicine, a branch of medicine which he worked to perfect. Today, the school he started bears his name A.T.Still University and its influence has reached across the globe to help start other Osteopathic Universities around the world.

Kirksville is the home of Northeast Regional Medical Center which offers a very high degree of medical technology and tremendous healthcare to the regional population. Its award winning services are second to none in the state.


Healthcare is one of the leading pillars of our economic base.The tradition began with Andrew Taylor Still, the founding father of Osteopathic Medicine, when he opened the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1892. Today, osteopathic physicians are one of the fastest growing segments of healthcare providers and are on the cutting-edge of modern medicine, able to combine technology with compassion and their ability to treat patients as a whole.

Northeast Missouri Health Council

The Northeast Missouri Health Council (NMHC) was established in 1968 to serve the primary healthcare needs of Northeast Missouri residents. As a not-for-profit health center, NMHC's methods of care, service and responsibility include the following:

  • Identification of health care and social services needs and programs within the region.
  • Broad access for the provision of quality health and dental care, and health education.
  • Fiduciary responsibility optimizing resources to provide the most cost effective program to maintain affordability to patients and long-term corporate viability.
  • Develop and maintain program linkages with other health care providers to prevent duplication of services, obtaining the greatest utilization of limited resources within the service area, and promoting the utilization of those available services.
Today their vision continues to expand as they identify and put into practice beneficial health care programs for patients. With state-of-the-art facilities and quality control programs, Northeast Missouri Health Council has become the medical home for the region.

Preferred Family Health Care:

Preferred Family Healthcare (PFH) is a comprehensive behavioral health non-profit organization established in 1979. PFH provides substance abuse treatment/prevention and mental health services throughout Missouri. PFH’s mission is to continually strive to be a dynamic, caring organization united to assist others in achieving their potential.

Northeast Regional Medical Center:

The dedicated team at Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC) takes the responsibility of caring for you and your family to heart every day. More than 550 people in the community work at the medical center, and the growing medical staff now stands at more than 200 physicians and healthcare providers.

NRMC is a Level III Trauma and Chest Pain Center. Physicians on staff specialize in a wide variety of practices, from emergency and preventive care to cardiology and surgery, including orthopedic and minimally-invasive general and gynecological surgeries.
