Agriculture

Agriculture has been a pillar of the Kirksville community since 1841. Kirksville is located in Adair County and is 567 sq. miles. The majority of farms in Adair County are family owned. Below are facts about the agriculture in Adair County:

· Average value of agricultural products sold per farm: $22,150
· Average value of crops sold per acre for harvested cropland: $108.97
· The value of nursery, greenhouse, floriculture, and sod as a percentage of the total market value of agricultural products sold: 1.62%
· The value of livestock, poultry, and their products as a percentage of the total market value of agricultural products sold: 48.28%
· Average total farm production expenses per farm: $18,546
· Harvested cropland as a percentage of land in farms: 35.73%
· Average market value of all machinery and equipment per farm: $39,127

Other Industries which fall under our Agriculture Pillar are located in the City of Kirksville’s Industrial Park. This park was recently named a certified AT&T Fiber Park in May 2012.

The Kirksville facility is housed on 28 acres. The facility manufactures and distributes Oscar Mayer Retail and Food Service Bacon and Oscar Mayer Square cold Cuts (ham). Raw material meats (bellies and hams) are procured within a 250 miles radius of the facility. Consumers can find the locally manufactured meat products in the grocery stores and can enjoy the food service products in chain restaurants such as Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Country Kitchen and Chili’s.
They currently employ 500 people, and give back to the community in several charitable ways.

 

Hartzell Hardwoods

Hartzell Hardwoods is new to Kirksville after purchasing Reliant Hardwoods, a subsidiary of Renneberg Hardwoods, in August 2012. Hartzell Hardwoods is proud to be known throughout the world as a leading producer of fine walnut lumber as well as top quality thick red and white oak lumber. Hartzell Hardwoods produces 17 million board feet of lumber annually, of which 11-13 million board feet is exported each year to customers throughout Europe, Mexico, the Far East and the Middle East.

The Kirksville facility is one of 83 US owned envelope producing plants. The current location is owned by the city of Kirksville and leased to Cenveo. Their main production is returnable envelopes for companies such as Capital One, Verizon, and more. They currently employ more than 50 people.
